About Bodegas Emotion
Our philosophy is to focus on the work in the vineyard and bring transparency to the terroir.
-How the winery came about.
"Emotion: Illusion" came about as the result of a comprehensive, year long, study of the terroirs, in which we scoured the various latitudes and the lay of the land throughout the Iberian Peninsula, with the prime objective of rescuing vineyards from being grubbed up. Our vines are very old because of this. After an extensive screening process (12 fine wine producing regions) we fell in love with the terroir of Laguardia in Rioja.
-Who are we?
Asier Arriluzea, the winemaker, has been making wine for many years, since he obtained a Master's Degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the “Escuela de Ingenieros Agrónomos” (School of Agricultural Engineering) in Madrid. His specialization was the use of wood and the native yeasts from the Rioja Alavesa area. Later, he specialised in winery design after completing his training at the “Escuela Técnica de Arquitectura” (Technical school of architecture) at the University of Navarra. He is a great wine enthusiast who has been acquainted with the vineyards in Rioja from an early age.
Eneko Knörr is an economist who works in mobile technology in San Francisco, California. He is a great lover of authentic wines with terroir.
-What are we trying to do?
Above all, we are seeking to reduce the Carbon Footprint in the vineyards and in the winery.
We strive to ensure that as few vineyards as possible are grubbed up and we save and revive all that we can. We are also gradually converting the vineyards to organic viticulture. We have already stopped using tractors.
In our wine growing, we seek to express a terroir, which is different to the “same old Rioja” and which possesses a terrain with alterations in its composition, which set it apart within the Rioja area. We have found certain components with a denominator very common in volcanic soils. We believe that this unique plot of land, where our single vineyard wine comes from, is special, as it contains many layers of diverse components (limestone, granite, sand, etc).
We also constantly strive to work with a sense of heightened awareness, to a code of ethics and responsibility, close to innovation and the principle of transversality, retaining our sense of humour in everything we do and convey.
